The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a harrowing true story that is truly compelling and utterly unputdownable. This is a very emotive story of love and friendship in the most unlikely of places.

This is the story of Lale Sokolov, a Jew who was held during World War 2 in the Auschwitz prison camp. In the camp he is put to work in the privileged position of the 'Tatowierer' - the tattooist - to mark his fellow prisoners as they arrive in camp. He himself was prisoner 34902 and falls in love with fellow prisoner Gita while tattooing her.Gita captures his heart immediately and it becomes his dream to one day be with Gita forever, outside of the camp. This is a love story like no other and so much more as well. He is constantly faced with moral dilemmas, gruesome deaths, and the possible loss of his true love.

I had tears in my eyes while reading this, and by the time I reached the Author’s Note and additional information I was sobbing.

5 stars for a heart wrenching unforgettable read.
