I knew I was going to be in tears when I first read the blurb. Based on the true story of Lale Sokolov, and the horrific events of the Holocaust that need to be remembered - this novel masterpiece does just that. It portrays the realness of events, while pulling at your heartstrings and following the morally hard decisions of the main character, Lale, who becomes a tattooist at Auschwitz. This gives him some immunity against the horror of the concentration camp, but not for his fellow prisoners. It’s interesting to follow the hard decisions that Lale has to make - save himself or risk himself to help others? It makes you wonder what you would do in such an awful situation, and to remember the lives of millions of Jewish people killed in the Holocaust. This gives a completely different side to how you view the horrific events of World War Two, more than just a textbook or documentary - you can fully immerse yourself in the tragedy. It’s definitely worth a read. And a cry!
