This book is about two people, Lale and Gita, who survived a concentration camp at Auschwitz and eventually led a life in Australia.
It attempts to speak of the tragedies in a new light in a way of hope, though we need much more representation on such matters to romanticize and to make a horrible matter beautiful which can rather be harmful. But I guess what's so beautiful about this book is not actually that it's true. Because it is both too beautiful and too ugly to really "enjoy" reading such an honest first hand account, it dares to go to a place of romance in a time of misery. To find the light and to protect not only himself but love at first sight Gita. For the issue I have is that after it finished, the recounting of young love while 1,000 people an hour are being pointlessly wiped out just seemed….inappropriate. It's too light and fluffy, and that just is not appropriate when writing anything to do with “Das Endlich Loesung” otherwise known as the final solution.
