I had seen this book everywhere, so when I stumbled across an inexpensive second hand copy I simply had to give it a try.
And in all honesty, I was a little disappointed.
While the subject matter is very profound, the writing did not do it justice. The style was very simplistic and casual, as if the author were telling a story to a friend. The result was a piece that didn't quite feel like the beautiful literature that such a touching plotline deserved.
In addition to this, the characters were not developed enough for my taste and scenes with great potential were not spun poetically enough to induce emotion.
To summarize, I do not believe this novel to be worthy of its reputation and in my opinion it should be seen as a historical account and not a piece of literature.
