Beautiful book on the life of Lale Sokolov, who was a Slovakian Jew who was at the concentration camp in Auschwitz. He was put to work as a tattoist, taking on the task of permanently numbering the fellow prisoners who were being held at the camps. The book follows this 2 and a half years at the camp, and how he met his wife Gita. A light of hope in a extremely awful time.

I put off reading this book for a long time. I knew I would find it upsetting, and also didn't want to relive school History classes. However, I was completely wrong. The book is beautifully written, without getting away from the facts of what happened. It's extremely personal, and really shows what it was like to be there, in such a human way which cannot be potrayed through history books. I completely loved it, as much as it was so awful to read at times, it's an extremely important book.
