I received this book as a gift and flew through it in two sittings. Overall, I found this book to be strangely uplifting despite the horrendous setting and hideous circumstances that it describes. I’ve always had an interest in this period of history and found this to be a surprisingly easy read. I think the story is beautifully told, perhaps lacks some detail in parts but generally draws a clear picture. With the world in its current state and the rise of the extreme right, this is an interesting read and hopefully its popularity will lead to some pause for thought. I hope people are not put off by the title and will give it a chance. I look forward to reading further books by this author.
