This book has been on my to read list for ages so decided I would read it before reading the sequel, Cilka's Journey.

This novel is based on the true story of Lale, a Slovakian Jew who ends up working as the tattooist in Auschwitz. He's there for three years, and during this time he meets and falls in love with Gita. Lale is a very kind and charming man and he manages to get treats which he uses to bribe guards in order for him to spend time with Gita.
Both Lale and Gita are reunited after they leave Auschwitz and go on to marry and have a child.
Understandably, they are both very affected by their time in the camp and don't discuss it.

I was surprised at how absorbing and readable the story was. It conveys the horrors of Auschwitz but also the strength of character of the prisoners.

Looking forward to reading the sequel.
