This is a fascinating read about a subject which evoked both shock and disgust within me but also gave me a huge amount of empathy towards those poor souls whose lives were destroyed and whose stories need to be remembered. With beautifully written characters whose care and love for each other gave them the will they needed to survive. Given a complexity of feeling by the author each character, no matter how brief their appearance, evokes an emotional response by the reader, whether it is an inmate of the camps or an SS officer. It is impossible as a reader not to feel emotion of sympathy or distaste towards the characters, even creating such an emotional bond with Lale and Gita that it is impossible not to hope for their survival.
