Touching, tense, heartbreaking but also heartwarming. I couldn’t put it down.

I don’t want to spoil the story, but this is a tale of how something wonderful came out of something truly horrific. It is honest about the atrocity of the concentration camps and this is something we need to keep facing, so we never forget how awful humanity can be. Yet it is important so that we are reminded also of how resilient humans can be in the face of hatred, evil and extreme suffering.
.
The protagonist Lale encourages optimism and perseverance and faith that things CAN be better again. We should heed his actions and remember when facing hardship ourselves that they do end and we can rebuild.

I didn’t want this to end, I wanted to read about Lale and Gita for many days to come. This book is brutal but extremely important: an absolute must read.
