As a lover of historical fiction, in my particular, German history, I found this story both harrowing and fascinating. Based on a true story, at times I got wrapped up in the story and forgot that these are not just characters but the stories of real people’s experiences.

Lale’s character was deep and well developed, as was his relationship with Gita and the other prisoners. The plot was paced appropriately. It was clear that Heather Morris had taken careful and sensitive consideration to ensure historical accuracy when describing experiences of the Holocaust. This is not an easy task, as we move away from an era where there are first hand witnesses who survived the Holocaust.

With a haunting subject matter, Morris nevertheless manages to effectively portray the love story of Lale and Gita and what it means to love and care for someone during this horrific time.

I have already purchased the sequel Cilka’s journey.
