This book is a harrowing story of survival and loss, and I could not put it down. It is the story of Lale Sokolov, a Jewish man imprisoned at Auschwitz and given the role of tattooist because of his ability to speak several languages. He risks his life by using his position to help others survive.

It is based on the true story of Lale Sokolov and the author became good friends with the protagonist in the process of writing it. He was an incredibly brave, lucky, and compassionate person who helped to save the lives of others in a place of death and despair.

Although a very sad and upsetting book, it also contains a heart warming love story. Lale falls in love with Gita and uses his love to motivate him to survive and help others to do so too.

It is a heart wrenching and unforgettable read that has stayed with me long after the last page. I will be looking out for more books by Heather Morris.
