A disappearing school girl/teacher couple, a later suicide. Should be a great read but the story was disengaging and confusing.

Good descriptions of the settings. Such as the elite Convent school, on the coastal promontory, antiquated turrets and thick lemon scented god doors. The grey, mist-drizzled conditions in this part of Ireland. The contrasting city tower block off which Victoria jumps. All super.

The characters were OK, there was a heavy use of descriptive language rather than letting the characters behaviour bring their definition, which made it difficult to understand where they were coming from. Louisa stood out as a moody intelligent kid with strange ideas in regards to emotional attachment, perhaps from her parents break up, but more likely from her solitude. I think it was Victoria who jumped off the building, didn't learn much about her character, but maybe she will build up in future chapters. I didn't warm to any of the characters, none displayed a unique voice.

The plot was too clouded, perhaps because of disconnected way the narrative jumped forward and backward in time. The teacher and Louisa vanishing without a trace was key to the engaging the reader, but so many unconnected events seemed to happen in this short piece, I could not understand where the author was leading me. I wanted more clarity to get into this book.
