Slow, laborious start - but shows signs of improvement

The book is written from various different people's points of view, and jumps backwards and forwards in chronology - this is not a unique style, but certainly draws you in with the prologue from the journalist, feeling that there may be an interesting story to uncover.
However, the first chapter is unfortunately poorly written, with laboured sentences that feel unnatural and OTT in style (not to mention the number of times there/their appears). The following couple of chapters are much better in style, but unfortunately the beginning has already made me impatient and lacking in sympathy for the narrator - maybe that's the idea?
A promising idea for a story, sadly poorly executed in my opinion.
