The story is mostly told from two perspectives, Louisa's and the Journalists. The story starts with a suicide and then is told from the past and the present.
Louisa has gained a scholarship at Temple House. When she starts, the rich girls shun her and generally treat her like she is nothing, apart from Victoria. Victoria is a rich girl, but they forge a shared bond. They become friendly with the bohemian art teacher, Mr Lavelle. He teaches the art classes in the old summerhouse in the school grounds where he encourages them to be whatever they want to be.
The Journalists viewpoint is when she is looking into the disappearance of both Louisa and Mr Lavelle 25 years before. Her connection is that she used to live opposite Louisa. As she interviews various people from the time, she is at first met with a wall of silence from the Head Girl from the time. She then meets Victoria and over a couple of meetings the story starts to unfold.
