What a relief that I have finished this book!
On several occasions, I thought I would give up but I’m glad I persisted even though I’m not exactly sure that it made sense to me.
It is a disturbing tale of teenage love in a strict Irish Catholic boarding school between pupils, Louisa and Victoria, with a trendy art teacher, Mr Lavelle, all mixed up in it. Louisa and Mr Lavelle disappear and it is assumed have run away together.
A journalist, who is never named, is writing about the disappearance several years later and this provokes Victoria to commit suicide.
I didn’t really empathise with any of the characters and there wasn’t much plot to keep me turning the pages. This book does not compare favourably with a book by Joanne Harris which I read some years ago which had a similar plot and setting.
I’m glad I didn’t give up although I won’t by rushing to read any further books by this author.
