I am gripped already. The scene is set for secrets, coming of age and a setting which is both mundane and unsettling.

The novel has a narrative voice which is confiding. We are met with so many questions to be answered. The boarding school is rendered for the reader as cold and austere and this will no doubt add to the suspense, mystery of the plot.

We are given some background to the characters. There is much that is instantly familiar for the reader, the awkwardness of adolescence, the veneer we put on to fit in. The use of subjective narration also adds to the tension. How far do we trust what the narrator tells us.

The writing style is easily accessible. Yet descriptions are also evocative and atmospheric.

This is one to savour.
