A family divided seek redemption in America.
Nora is the spoilt daughter of her mother while Delia is despised by her mother though loved by her father. Delia works the land with her father despite having being intelligent and seeking refuge in her books. Nora is not as intelligent and spends her days with her mother and lording it over her sister and the other girls of the village.
There lives change when their mother receives a letter from America offering a daughter the chance of living as a governess for an Irish émigré family. While her mother chooses Nora for this role with a view to her marrying the father of the child she is to be governess too, Delia is championed by her father. He accepts that Delia wishes to leave the home that her mother has caused her to despise and he finds her employment as a maid for another family in America.
Nora was supposed to travel first class to America on the Titanic but at her father's behest both she and Delia will travel to America on the Titanic in steerage.
