I was drawn into this story straight away, set in Donegal, Ireland in 1911 and follows two sisters growing up on the family farm. Nora is definitely the favourite in the eyes of her mother as she can do no wrong whereas Delia is ignored and treated badly. She was born a twin and her brother only lived for a few minutes and her mother seemed to hold a grudge over Delia for this, calling her a changling. Through the course of the book the mother was really nasty to Delia and wanted nothing to do with her. Only her father seems to have any affection towards Delia. After a distant relative requests that one of the sisters become a governess to a young girl Lily, who has lost her mother, the family decide to let both girls go to America on Titanic, sharing the cost and travelling 3rd class. Everyone knows what happened to Titanic but what happens to the sisters makes a very good story.
Will Nora and Delia survive and if they do, will they be the same sisters that left Donegal ? Will their parents be able to cope with their grief and heartache? This story describes the emotions of the two girls well and the way they were treated by both family and friends and each other. Each chapter is written in the way that the girl is describing events with the name of Delia or Nora so you don't get confused.
I really enjoyed this book and I liked the character of Delia, she had real guts and stamina to survive all that was thrown at her and her sister Nora was a bit of a love/hate character. Full of drama, from Ireland to New York, onto Texas in the oil fields and I am sure like me you won't be able to put this book down. Well worthy of 5☆.
