From the age of 6 Jonathan Cranston wanted to become a Vet and now at 37 deals with a variety of animals from cats and dogs to Giant pandas and Leopards.

Each Chapter of the book is named after an animal and tells of his dealings with that particular animal either at home of abroad. The chapter ends with fast facts about the species, life span habitat etc. I particularly liked the names for groups of each animal eg giraffes 'a tower' , armadillos 'a fez' and 'a confusion' of wildebeests.

Jonathan first worked in North Devon and tells the tale of when he had to microchip a pet he thought would be a cat but was in fact a nine banded armidillo and had to resort to google to work out how to do the job. Another patient of his was Freddie a Sable Ferret who had eaten his owners stash of cannabis and was as high as a kite and had the munchies for days after.

Later he worked at the Ngonigon game reserve in South Africa helping to treat the wildlife and also to capture wildlife to relocate them. I found the chapter on his time dealing with rhinos and the savage descriptions of the mutilation of these creatures by poachers heartbreaking.

This was a funny and sad book which all lovers of animals big and small will love
