After several attempts - and even breaking one of my own golden rules - and trying to read from the middle of the book, I was unable to get beyond the egotistical author and his self praise.
I did persevere. I kept coming back to it, starting afresh. In the end I did read it all, but did I enjoy it? Not really.
The animals should have been the stars and indeed Arnie the armadillo did stand out as a deal character! I wanted to read more about him and other animals. The writer certainly had a wealth of experience to draw on - elephants, snow leopards and so on- and the potential to do so much more with it.
Maybe my expectations were too high from first impressions but
