I’m not a non fiction reader, generally I consider it a ‘boring’ genre however I was more than pleasantly surprised by The Travelling Vet. It’s well writing in a very relaxed, accessible style and each chapter is an easy length to read yet you still get lots of relevant background information about the animal in question. It succeeds in giving you the information in a manner which is not overly clinical and therefore hard to follow but definitely not patronising either, a good balance. The stories behind each animal are fascinating too, they’re told in an anecdotal manner so it gives you good insight into a personal experience of the animal whilst giving you the facts too, the fact files at the end of each chapter help here too.

The book is not told in a chronological order and each chapter is independent of the others so you could just pick one at random should you chose. This also makes it good for more occasional readers as you don’t need to remember what you’ve read once you have finished a chapter so you can literally dip in and out of it as you want. There is a good balance of stories that really make you think about conservation in the wild but also some fab stories from general practice, goat was good but ferret was without a doubt the best, so funny. I think it would also be great as a gift as the subject matter has wide appeal and it is so easy to read and is definitely not ‘boring’
