From the small section that I read, this seems like a truly delightfully gothic tale with some Nordic aspects and a strong theme of supernatural. There was a certain fairytale like quality to the prose than lent a strong hand of fantasy.

I love stories that have a sort of paranormal element to them and this book was no exception. Martha has the ability - or curse - to be able to feel other people's emotions and memories once she touches their clothes. This gift occurred after she fell from her Mormor's tree, leaving her blind in one eye.

I felt like that flaw made me take an immediate liking to this anxiety ridden half-blind girl. There is an intense, pivotal theme of descriptions of people's reactions of horror followed by embarrassment or pity when seeing the disfigurement upon the main characters face. It drew me to her, not out of pity, but because of her strength to endure at best, daily stares, and at worst, full on bullying and torture.

I found the writing engaging and the plot compelling. I'm excited to read the entirety of this book.
