This novel is an interesting modern update on a legendary Norse myth, something which does not become apparent until the second or third paragraph. This is not problematic - it only helps to add to the mystery which the story is weaving.
I very much enjoyed the protagonist Martha, a likeable and strong female character fitting with the feminist rise in young adult literature seen in recent times. However, I did feel that the secondary character of Stig could have been used more - I would have liked to see a twist on his actual identity, perhaps, or a more resolute ending for him, as, at one point, he was as much a main character as Martha was.
Finally, I very much enjoyed the traits and themes of family throughout this book. Despite one of the secondary characters being very much absent for the majority of the book, you could very much feel the bond between her and Martha throughout the novel.
A stunning debut, I am looking forward to reading more from Rachel Burge.
