If you love reading spooky tales with a hint of magic during this time of year then this is the perfect book for you! A great start to what is promising to be a fascinating story, I thoroughly enjoyed the gothic atmosphere, the ever building suspense and the tantalising aura of mystery throughout. The first few lines draw you in as you are introduced to the protagonist who is traveling alone, without parental approval, to visit her grandmother.

Martha comes across as a brave and impulsive young woman, dealing with the aftermath of an accident, that not only leaves her disfigured but with a unique ability to sense others’ secrets through their clothing. This proves to be both a blessing and a curse as Martha realises that there are some secrets better left unknown. In spite of it all, she seems a sensitive and compassionate individual. .

The story is set in the modern world, with cell phones and airports, but that is easy to lose sight of as the author deftly weaves in hints of an ancient magic. One cannot shake a sense of foreboding as Martha proceeds to Norse land. I cannot wait to read more of this story!
