I know next to nothing about the period of history on the discovering of the America's but I loved the books opening with the debate between character's as to who discovered it first and the evidence. Not just because it is well written and a good way to introduce the personalities of the characters but also because it is immediately evident that Michael Ridpath has researched this book and is equally interested in the debate.

Even though you knew what was coming I was actually really interested in the historical parts and names from the viking eras being tossed around and then the story picks up when a film crew discovers a body

AS per crime thrillers cue a jump to the police side of things which goes on a differnet tangent with assault and a suggestion of organised crime.

I can't tell if there's any connection or if it's mrerely backstory settign the scene but I'd like to find out!

This first impression leaps around a bit and has a lot going on at the start introducing people and multiple story points, which is a bit busy but not overwhelming

It is clearly a book with some depth to it written by a knowledgeable author and the crime thriller coupled with the characters knowledge and historical leanings really captured my interest.
