A mixture of historical and crime mystery as Detective Inspector Magnus Ragnarsson newly returned to Iceland from America, investigates the death of an Italian tourist that seems to be linked to the work of a TV documentary crew filming the story of Gudrid the Wanderer.
As clues prove to lead to dead ends and pressure mounts on Magnus to solve the crime he finds himself looking at a narrower suspect pool but no apparent motive or at least no motive that would be readily acceptable to the courts. Another murder leads to an intensification of the inquiry and the pressure on Magnus and the police as a whole as the politicians begin to worry about the effect the first murder will have on tourism and thus on the still recovering Icelandic economy.
In addition to the worries of the case Magnus also finds himself staying with an ex-cop who has a questionable service record. His new landlord is also carrying a secret that has put his life at risk.
This is a fast moving crime thriller that is the latest addition to a series that I had not come across before but is one that I will seek to read more of.
