This was my first time reading a book by Michael Ridpath and I was intrigued by the vague title and bleak book cover. The title and cover reminded me of Cormac McCarthy's The Road or ever the good old Waiting for Godot, and so I felt compelled to find out more. Alas, the book itself could not any more different to Waiting for Godot with such a gripping storyline (sorry Samuel Beckett). This being said, the book definitely possessed a little of that bleak feeling as Ridpath clearly tries to replicate in his writing the scenery, but it still remains gripping and interesting. When a documentary is filmed on wanderer, Gudrid, the crew discover a dead body and things quickly become very interesting. Set in peaceful Iceland, the murder is extremely curious and surprising. Overall, the novel makes for an interesting murder-mystery read, it definitely could've been a bit more dramatic in places, I feel, but all in all, I enjoyed the read.
