From the very first page it was obvious that Bee and Loo's relationship was a complex one. Bee comes across as strict and bossy, not unlike most older sisters, however
The girls' relationship with their parents also seem a little off, calling them by their first names was the first instance that the reader notices that something is a little off. Everything about that family seems a little off, and then the reader is introduced to the knocking in the walls. Nina then describes the family as 'dysfunctional', which makes the reader even more suspicious of what really went on in that house.
It makes you want to keep reading and find out what really happened in that house all those years ago, and why the family behave so peculiarly.
The first glimpse of paranormal activity is terrifying, and when the knocking begins it is a warning that it is about to get even more terrifying.
