With the honourable exception of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, the fantasy genre has at best been considered something for nerds and geeks. Recently, only Game of Thrones has made any sort of impact on mainstream media. So it's always interesting to see where other authors are going in the fantasy field. And immediately one is struck by a strong female lead, very much a rarity.
