I'm also not a particular fan of fantasy fiction in general - so this extract didn't really engage me, although the other reviews suggests the author has many fans who enjoy visiting the world she's created. I really don't like present-tense narrative, with its limited range of expressiveness. As Philip Pullmas puts it: 'I feel claustrophobic, always pressed up against the immediate.' So it is here - the narrator's constant present is grating.
