The Wicked King starts off five months after the events of the first book, The Cruel Prince. Jude is navigating her way through her bargain with Cardan while struggling to maintain a hold on her power while protecting those she loves. Now in the palace as the right hand to the monarch, we see more of the inner workings of the court and learn more about the history of fairy. The writing style is similar to the first book and is in the point of view of Jude only which is something the author masters perfectly. Even though we see the world through Jude the reader still senses and learns things going on around Jude that gives us a feeling of a third person insider. This sequel exceeded my expectations by a long shot. There is political drama, action, plot twists, and of course romance. Every character is beautifully flawed and Holly Black paints a realistic and magical portrayal of this fairy world. If you were a fan of her works and especially The Cruel Prince then this is an essential. Definitely in the top books of the new year!
