I enjoyed this story at least as much as the first in the series but I wouldn't have made much sense of it if I hadn't read 'The Cruel Prince' first. In this episode our protagonist Jude matures whilst already being in a position of great power over other important and powerful characters. Her whole life is balanced on a knife edge of bluff and fear. She is strong and determined. Her uncertainties and sense of constant danger coupled with her continual striving to maintain her fitness and value to others make her very real and likeable.

At times I got a little lost in the machinations, treachery, plots and allegiances but Holly Black always pulled me through with her relentless drive, vigorous action and vivid scenes.

I really think this series could run and run!
