All I’m going to say about the plot is that it’s about Jude trying to make sure Faerie is running smoothly, while dealing with an antagonistic Cardan, threats from Balekin, and a new problem in the form of the Undersea. Oh, and let’s not forget that Locke is still hanging around, Madoc is still angry, and Taryn is still a twin-betrayer. Trust me, it’s better if you go into this book not knowing any more than what I’ve just said.

The Wicked King is a beautiful, beautiful character study. You breathe despair and loneliness alongside Jude, you can see her mentally spiralling down right in front of you. It was almost scary, how much I felt for her.

And Cardan. We know he’s cruel, and wicked, and he stays that way – as a violent enigma. But we also learn more about the past that shaped him. His motivations are as obscure as ever, but I went away feeling like I’d perhaps gotten to know him a little better. His actions are as incomprehensible as they’ve always been, unless you think about the fact that sometimes you have to hurt the people you love. I think he and Jude are the best characters in all of YA literature.I’ve read a lot of YA literature; I don’t say that lightly.

Writing this review is making me want to pick the book up again and reread it right now. That ending… all I can say is, if I actually have to wait until January 2020 to read The Queen of Nothing, I might go mad. Jude, you are bloody amazing. The rest of you, get your hands on a copy of The Wicked King as soon as you physically can. You won’t regret it.
