I honestly wasn’t the biggest fan of The Cruel Prince. In fact, if it wasn’t for the twist at the end of that book, I probably wouldn’t have continued with this series.

But that twist was the hook I needed to pick up The Wicked King, and I’m actually really glad I did as I thought the second book in the series was actually quite brilliant!

The main thing I enjoy about this series is the world that Holly Black has created. She’s often called the Queen of Faerie, and these books definitely show why, as the locations and creatures she describes are so fantastical. Much of it is based on folk tales, especially the various types of fae, but she puts her own twists on it to make the world of Elfhame magical and a little bit creepy – which I love!

This was the book where I started to love Jude and a Cardan a little. If I’m completely honest, I couldn’t get along with their characters of their relationship in TCP, but TWK was where their love/hate relationship really started to make sense to me, and I’ll even admit that I began to fall a little in love with Cardan… I’m still not completely on board with Jude and Cardan as a couple, but I do think their interaction is really well written and fun to read.

I also felt that the story was much more fast paced in this book as well, which made me enjoy it much more. This book has genuinely made me more excited about picking up the third and final book in the series, and I can’t wait to see if all of Jude’s plans work out, and what happens to the various characters of Elfhame.
