I just finished reading The Cruel Prince and was desperate to read anything of the sequel, and this preview did not disappoint at all. The characters are just as vibrant and lively as the setting of Faerie itself, and they aren't any less unpredictable. Jude is a brave and intriguing main character and she continues to shine on through these first few chapters.

The writing style is lush and detailed; you can truly picture the magic of Faerie and the diverseness of the folk within it. My only issue is that sometimes the formal style of Jude's internal monologue seems mismatched with her personality/age; yes this may be how she was taught to think in Faerie, but it still seems rather formal and uptight for someone of her age and distracts a little from the realness of her as a human teenage girl.

Other than that, I loved the first book and these first chapters have everything - the dynamic characters, scenes and dialogue - of the first which made it so good.
