Words cannot describe how much I loved this book. It's the second in a trilogy by Holly Black, and I'm waiting incredibly impatiently for the final instalment.

Following the first book, The Cruel Prince, Jude has tricked Cardan into becoming the High King, and he is forced to do everything he can to obey her commands, until her power over him expires. This is not a simple victory for Jude, however, and it becomes abundantly clear that she does not have the control that she was hoping for.

With tensions rising across the land, and Jude running out of time to solidify her authority, this book is tense and violent and incredibly well-constructed.

As with the first book, Holly Black does so well delving into her character's personalities and making each one uniquely fascinating and, generally, uniquely cruel. Cardan becomes even more infuriating throughout this novel, and Jude becomes such a controversial heroine, it's difficult to compare her to any other.

I loved this book so much. The ending is incredibly aggravating and I'm desperate for the final instalment, but I would of course recommend this book. Having gone almost a year without becoming so deeply invested in character's lives, I'm so impressed with Holly Black's writing.
