The Wicked King picks up a few months into the deal Jude has made with Carden and we see how much pressure Jude is under as, thanks to their deal, she is practically ruling the kingdom from the shadows, while also dealing with Carden's attitude, her worry over how fast her time is running out and if Oak will be ready to be king, and other characters' attempts to embarrass or catch her out.
This is an excellent follow up to A Cruel Prince and Holly Black's writing and characters keep you enthralled from the very beginning; I've heard some people call it 'slow' at the start but I disagree - although it is much more political than the first book, it is still action packed from the get go and we get a closer look at some of the characters only mentioned briefly in the first book.
I would highly recommend this series to anyone who likes a dark fairy story.
