I'd read Holly Black's 'A Cruel Prince' and I didn't overly enjoy it, until towards the end. However, when 'The Wicked King' came out, I thought I'd give it a go and see how our character developed. I must say, I enjoyed this book much more than the first. I liked the courtly plotting and intrigue as well as the developing, unusual relationship between Jude and Cardan (I still try not to think of the tail! Ugh!)
So, Jude in the previous book had watched a traumatic event and was taken to live in the world of Faerie. As a human, it is a dangerous place and she is despised by many. One of her most hated Fae, is Prince Cardan and he also seemingly hates her. This is the oxymoron level to their relationship, particularly considering the developments in this book.
Cardan is now in a position of power, although he is controlled by a promise to Jude; she is working hard in the background, pulling the strings to keep the throne safe for her young step-brother and combat the continual threats to take the crown from Cardan.
I enjoyed immersing myself in the land of faerie this time round and I'll be looking out for the third book to find out what happens after a huge cliff-hanger of an ending!
