This is the sequel in the folk of air trilogy. Unpopular opinion but I didn’t like this book. I did enjoy it more than the first book (the cruel prince). Wicked king isn’t bad and I did like it it just felt a little disconnected from the plot.
The atmosphere of the fae world wasn’t done as greatly in this book aswell. I didn’t feel immersed into the world as I did in cruel prince and that was a big let down for me. I think the combination of the mortal world being more involved in this book than in the first was at fault here.
At times I felt it was a little too predictable, I’m not sure if that’s my great intuition at fault here of Holly blacks writing.
I really like how cruel prince ended but I’m not sure I can say the same for this book.
However I can see why a lot of people love this book after following on from cruel prince. The Cruel Prince is a great book for many reasons. Firstly, the writing is dense with tension, dripping with atmosphere and intrigue. It's quiet and eerie, lending itself perfectly to the dark richness of the book.

This is not the case with wicked king. The writing feels clunky, and I often wondered to myself why the sequel to a well-loved book feels like a first draft. It's short, so Black has to get through a lot in very little time. As a consequence, her writing suffers severely. Gone is the tension and the quieter moments and the slow-burn that made The Cruel Prince so dazzling. Instead, the reader is inundated with blunt statements about the protagonist's thoughts, needs and ambitions. The reader is TOLD everything Jude Duarte is feeling, but none of that translates into scene.
But even after all this I still enjoyed it more than the cruel prince. I read this in one day as I did the same with cruel prince but I didn’t feel as obligated to finish it. It was a fun read despite all I had written here. I liked the characters and the banter they had and how they interacted with eachother. Everyone’s opinion on books are different so don’t let this review put you off this trilogy.
