After having read The Cruel Prince and loving it (although I had found Cardan and Jude’s relationship to hold a certain toxicity to it), I naturally moved onto the Wicked King - set 5 months after the ending of the first book. Cardan is king but Jude - she’s the true ruler.
I thought the book had everything I love in a good fantasy tale - the passion, the adventure and betrayal and pain and exquisiteness of a devastatingly dark beautiful world. Holly Black has a truly brilliant mind and an even more intense talent for weaving the tale together. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, in particular the dynamics between Cardan and Jude - I thought it was very interesting seeing the effect they have on each other and more so, how they exploit it to achieve their goals. The ending of The Wicked King had me frozen for a good while staring at the last page in shock.
I really hope The Queen of Nothing brings the ending this trilogy deserved (I’ve already begun reading it!)
