I went into The Wicked King not expecting very much, as I was one of those people who did not really enjoy The Cruel Prince, however the world still intrigued me. Curiosity was the main motivator behind me continuing with this trilogy. I'm delighted to say that The Wicked King was a vast improvement on The Cruel Prince and I found myself beguiled by the amount of political plotting and turns this story takes. It certainly doesn't suffer from "middle book syndrome".

This book still deals with some very problematic relationships but all characters are flawed in their own way, which makes for an interesting read. I was amazed at all of the twists in the last hundred or so pages, those pages alone are what bumped it to a four-star read for me.

If you're like me and weren't enamored by The Cruel Prince, I would really recommend giving The Wicked King a go. It wasn't incredible but it was a fun read, and I will definitely read the third book when released in 2020.
