The Wicked King is a long-awaited sequel to the rollercoaster of emotions, which was the first book. It ends where The Cruel Prince left off - with cruel Cardan on a throne and cunning Jude controlling his every action. Jude will do anything to protect both her little brother and the crown from her bloodthirsty adoptive father, but as old enemies scheme, new rise from the oceans. She will have to quickly determine who she chooses to trust because the most vicious betrays can come from her own family. As if it wasn't enough, her feelings for Cardan stay unresolved, as the young king does nothing to ease her situation.

This series is one of those that you have to read as a whole in order to really enjoy the story and appreciate all parts of it. I had a hard time getting through the first part of the first book, for it's kind of childish taste. Some of it still lingers even to this book, I often felt limited by the single Jude's POV, but I'm able to unsee the book's wrongs for the rights. Cardan was as always a joy to read about, you could feel the unease of coming betrayal crawling closer, but it still stung when it really came.

The intrigues of the Faerie court grow and you will soon learn that the so called "Cruel Prince" is the least sociopathic person in the whole Elfhame.
