I'm sad to say but this book was almost everything I hated about The Cruel Prince. I rated TCP as a four stat novel as I thought the ending redeemed it, however i cannot justify giving the sequel the same amount of stars.
As soon as you start the novel, you discover that five months have been and gone since the ending of TCP with no real indication as to what happened during this time span.
Jude is still as thrilling (or should I say dull) as she was in the previous book.
Occasionally an exciting occurrence will take place to keep you reading onwards, but otherwise hardly anything happens. I found this frustrating in TCP that chapters were passing and all I had discovered was Jude's circling thoughts, and the same happens in The Wicked King.
Holly Black is amazing at creating tension, this novel is one huge tense piece of literature. She somehow creates the novel equivalent of climatic movie music. And (spoiler) the story does reach it's climax in its final 20 pages!
The Wicked King is a carbon copy of The Cruel Prince minus/plus a few different characters. I enjoyed parts of the story more than others but it didn't live up to the standards I was expecting from a bestselling author.
