The Wicked King by Holly Black is the second book in the series, and I found it much more enjoyable than the first. It's a very imaginative, well-written tale, and is full of action.
Cardan is now the Wicked King (and thoroughly lives up to the name), with Jude acting as his seneschal. This unlikely pairing, coupled with lots of underhand plotting and back stabbing, makes it an interesting and enjoyable read.
As with The Cruel Prince, this story is full of unlikeable characters and many surprising twists and turns, and whilst it took me a while to get into the story, I found it engrossing and enjoyable. Without wishing to give anything away, the ending was a total surprise too, although with hindsight I should have predicted it.
I like the cover, and I particularly liked the delightful illustrations throughout the book. Thoroughly recommended, and I can't wait for the next instalment.
