In this novel, the Queen is revealed to be a secret detective who launches into action when a young man is found murdered at her home in Windsor after a ‘dine and sleep’. The idea of the queen being involved in a murder mystery is ludicrous, and I was expecting a book that didn’t take itself too seriously, so I was surprised by how believable the concept felt. By the end of the book, I was totally convinced that the queen is actually a secret detective!

All of the characters were written brilliantly, and I loved all the mentions of other famous people such as the Obamas and Sir David Attenbrough. Even Brexit was mentioned, and these modern touches added to the believability of the novel. At first I struggled to get into the writing, as it’s third person and has the habit to switch between character’s perspectives very suddenly - several times I had to re-read paragraphs to understand whose POV it was from. However, I got more used to this as I read on, and grew to enjoy certain perspectives immensely as the characters became more distinctive. I felt there was a good range of characters each of whom had different motives, desires and personalities.

Although this is a fun read, it’s also a brilliantly devised mystery, and I really enjoyed the progression of the mystery throughout the novel and the reveal at the end. It was intriguing to see how the puzzle pieces were put together, and I quickly grew to love Rozie as the queen’s right hand. I read the whole book in one sitting, as it is pretty fast-paced and not too long, which is a sign I enjoyed it and was eager to reach the ending. Overall, the plot and characters were wonderful, and I’m looking forward to delving back into this crime-solving world when the next book is released.
