The Windsor Knot by SJ Bennett, is the ideal book to help you forget about what is happening in the real world. What a joy to learn that as well as being Head of State to the UK and 15 other Commonwealth Realms, our Queen is also somewhat of an amateur detective, and quite a good one at that!
The book opens the day following a dinner party at Windsor Castle, with the Queen discovering that one of the guests has been found murdered. Naturally, the staff serving the Royal Household fall under suspicion, which annoys the Queen as she treasures her loyal employees, and knows the police are wrong. She sets out to find the real killer herself, because unbeknownst to anyone else, our beloved Queen has a secret; for many years she has been solving crimes.
What a wonderful idea this book is. The Queen is always so professional, how refreshing to discover that she has a secret, one that no one would ever suspect, but at the same time you know that she would make an excellent detective as she inspires loyalty in those around her. She clearly has a lot of patience too, (she needs to with some of the people she has to deal with) which a detective needs when trying to unravel clues and facts. How easy it would be for her to obtain the thoughts and suspicions of anyone she spoke to, as who would possibly dare to lie to the Queen. I liked the way the Queen and her private secretary Rozie worked together so well, not only on managing the Queen’s daily Royal duties, but also making time to solve the murder. Nice to see the faithful corgis get a mention too.
I’ve seen the book described as “ Miss Marple meets The Crown” and that is a perfect description. I’m really pleased to see that The Windsor Knot is just the first book in the 'Her Majesty The Queen Investigates' series. Long may she reign!
