This isn’t my usual sort of book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It tells the story of a suspicious death at Windsor Castle, and how the Queen is unconvinced by the theory being put forward by MI5. Unable to openly challenge her officials, she gets her new Assistant Chief Secretary to dig further. This is all very lighthearted, in spite of the grim subject matter, as it turns out that the Queen has been quietly solving crimes with the help of a succession of female assistants since she was about 12. Nothing is straightforward, as information has to be passed on anonymously, or lines of enquiry obliquely suggested by passing bits of gossip to people close to the enquiry. Lots of things are suggested without ever being made explicit, so you know what the reaction to the Queen’s assistant being a young black woman might be, but the confusion is just suggested.
This is definitely recommended for fans of The Crown.
