This was brilliant, but not in the way I had expected. I thought from the blurb and the extract that it was going to be an outrageously funny story about the queen solving outrageously funny crimes, which I could have enjoyed, but what I actually got was so much more than that. It was quietly funny, not mocking or ridiculous. The character of the queen was real and deeply developed, which must be a hard feat to achieve given how she is such a public figure and everybody each has their individual view of her. Moreover, the crime was well thought out, relevent and realistic rather than outrageous and farfetched. Moreover, the author had clearly done her research, including subtle references to actual events that aided the believability of the novel rather than hindering it or weighing it down with unnecessary detail. I loved all the references to the other royals, particularly the younger generations and the corgis, and Prince Philip always provided a laugh. I particularly liked the inclusion of the character of Rozie, who provided access in the form of the outsider. Knowing that this is a series, with a second book due for release in a years time, I am looking forward to following where the queens adventures take her, especially because eventually it will be the year 2020 and it will be interesting to see what crime the queen solves THAT year.
