I'd read one of Stephanie Butland's books before but this already feels like a development in terms of her writing. Dropping right into the present, we find Veronica Moon has a past that has gone terribly wrong, and that an exhibition of photographs contains the one picture that captures the moment her life went wrong. And then we are parachuted back to 1968 and an encounter with Leonie. This chapter contains so many tiny details, pieces of social history that we're constantly told don't matter, or aren't big enough to be important, yet when Butland sews them together like this suddenly show us how much has changed. The characters immediately gel and you know something is going to happen between them. I was immediately absorbed and would love to read on!
