I don't consider myself to be a feminist but maybe I don't need to be because equality of the sexes has changed considerably since the 60's. Vee and Leonie are two ordinary women who want to make an extraordinary change in society. I hadn't realised how oppressed women were in the 60's. Imagine not being able to order your own drink at a bar? I regularly go to social places on my own and could happily sit at a public bar without anyone flinching an eye but in the decade when I was born that would be considered highly inappropriate. Already I know I want to support Leonie and Vee in their fight for women's rights. It made me realise that fifty years on from the Dagenham protest we are still talking about and demanding equal pay for women. This book portrays the social history of the time very well. I definitely want to read more.
